AL Rips NL

The AL All-Stars knocked out the NL 15-3 in the 2000 GABL All-Star game.  The complete play-by-play follows.  Mark McGwire nipped Sammy Sosa in the home run derby.

 

It's a rainy night here in Kentucky, the game was delayed 20 minutes but it let up enough for the Umps to give it a go.

The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by Danville Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. Also being honored tonight and representing Danville's greatest are former Danville Stars Don Mattingly, Julio Franco and Bob Welch.

The National Anthems for Barbados, Canada, and the US will now be sung by Ziggy Marley, Anne Murray and Bruce Springsteen respectively.

Top of the First, Leading off for the NL All Stars is Alfonzo. Here's the pitch, a comebacker, right to Martinez Over to Olerud for the easy out, score it 1-3.

Next up, Mike Sweeney. Martinez gets the count to 1-2, here's the pitch.Sweeney tries to hold up Rodriguez points down at the first base umpire. The ump says he went around STRIKE THREE! That is the second out here in the top of the 1st.

Garciaparra comes in to kibitz with Martinez. While we have a moment, let me set the outfield distances for you. It's 318 feet down the line in left 399 feet to left-center 408 feet to straight-away center field. Then over in right-center it's 385 feet from home plate and 314 feet to the right field foul pole.

Next up, Chipper Jones from the Stirling Gashouse Gang, Jumping on the first pitch, grounded towards first Olerud grabs it IT'S A RACE TO THE BAG OUT! That's three outs, side retired

Leading off for the Al All Stars is Pudge Rodriguez. He works the count full then looks at ball four. That pitch wasn't even close...Must have got away from Hernandez. The players are having fits in this weather

Taking his lead Rodriguez is unable to get a big lead as Hernandez glances over his shoulder keeping him close

Garciaparra tries the hit and run! Ground ball to short Batista comes up with it He tosses it to second...Gets the force. One down for the AL.

John Olerud is still in the on-deck circle and Manny Ramirez is looking for a bat in the dugout.

Garciaparra edges away from the bag Garciaparra but is held closely by Hernandez.

Olerud rips a single to right field It falls in front of Everett Carl takes it on one bounce Garciaparra motors into third easily.

Olerud takes his lead Hard slider...Ramirez checks his swing. There goes Olerud on a delayed steal! Here's the peg...Good slide...Olerud is in there!

Curve in the dirt... and Ramirez holds up. Looked like he went around from here, but the plate ump says no. Ramirez will take first on the walk.

Base loaded, here's a hard slider inside...Swung on...Guerrero cut under it...it's a short pop up. Batista under it - Infield Fly rule called and Guerrero is automatically out. The ball is caught and the runners hold. Hernandez needs one more out here in the bottom of the 1st to get out of the jam.

Ventura works the count to 3-2, here's the pitch, he gets a good cut at it...He lifts it high and deep toward right. Everett is heading back...At the fence. It is just over for a home run! Grand Slam for Robin Ventura!!! Everett slaps his glove in disgust

Another slider by Hernandez Martinez gets good wood on it...Everett back-pedals quickly...Up with his glove...Out! And that retires the side, but the damage is done as The AL take a 4-0 lead.

Leading off the 2nd for the NL All Stars is Junior, Pedro comes to the plate.Lifted down the right field line. Coming hard is Vidro But Olerud waves him away and makes the grab One up, one down

Big Mac jumps on the first pitch Fly ball to right Ramirez is under it He grabs it for the out Two up, two down

Pedro is working fast tonight quickly getting ahead of the hitters. Here's Sosa on the 0-2 pitch Struck him out on a fastball Sosa goes down swinging And that will do it for the NL. 3 up and 3 down as Pedro retires all six of the batters he has faced.

Barry Bonds swings at the first pitch from Hernandez and hits a high fly ball down the right field line Everett is at the wall looking up... IT'S OUTTA HERE!! A long homerun for Barry Bonds the AL leads 5 to 0

Slow curve...Breaking in...Vidro swings, lifts a high fly Everett drifting back...Looks like he has a play...At the warning track...HOME RUN!!! Wow, I was sure that would be an out He got better wood on that then I thought It just kept carrying and carrying That's it for Hernandez as the Warden places him in chains and has him dragged from the field. Helling will pitch for the NL.

Pudge comes to the plate for the second time. He walked in his first at bat. Swung on and popped up Sweeney grabs it for the out Score It: 2 So Helling retires Rodriguez

Nomar Garciaparra will be up next for the AL 2 runs across here in the bottom of the 2nd

High hard fastball, swung on...It's a grounder hammered at second...Alfonzo is there...IT'S INTO RIGHT!!...It took a HIGH hop right over him! That's a single for Garciaparra

Garciaparra inches slowly away from the bag Helling's throws over have been effective Garciaparra has a shorter lead now He must be getting tired diving back into the bag

Next up, Olerud drives one into center Ken Griffey Jr. sprints over to make the play

Ramirez laces a hit into the outfield Carl Everett picks it up Fires it to the infield Ramirez holds with a single as Nomar moves to 2nd.

Guerrero hits one on the ground to short Batista grabs it Over to Casey Got him! Score It: 6-3 And that will do it for the AL

Randy Johnson in to start the 3rd inning. Checked swing by Casey Called ball four Rodriguez motions down to the third base umpire He gives the "safe" sign with no hesitation Sean walks to lead it off

Everett swings and hits a shot to deep left-center Guerrero and Bonds are converging on the ball Looks like Guerrero has the best shot at it He dives for it...WOW! He's got it! Fantastic play by Guerrero. Casey scurries back to first, he was already around second!

With one down, up next is Tony Batista To be followed by Edgardo Alfonzo

The cut at the high hard heat from Johnson...Batista lashes a hard groundball into left Casey makes a big turn at second...Watches Bonds field the ball cleanly...He applies the brakes and decides not to try for third

Alfonzo Lines hard to first Olerud jumps It's over his head for a single! Casey scores from second! Batista takes third

Mike Sweeney offers at the pitch, but checks his swing Oh, Sweeney couldn't get the bat out of the way It's a soft line drive to Garciaparra for the out Sweeney never even left the batter's box Two down

Due up next is Chipper Jones Let's see what happens now

Johnson bores one right down the pike Strike three swinging! Superb fastball that time That's three outs, side retired

Fastball... down and away...NO! It's called a strike And Ventura is outta there The NL gets the first out of the inning

Here's Edgar Martinez, he flew out to end the 1st inning. It's a high fly into center Griffey Jr. ranges to his right Reaches up, and takes it for the easy out That's two up, two down

Bonds swings and misses STRIKE THREE! Helling strikes out Barry Bonds And that retires the side

Junior leads of the 4th for the NL Grounded towards the bag Olerud flips to Johnson covering Score It: 3-1. With one away Johnson steps off the mound as he waits for Mark McGwire to come to the plate

Curve in the dirt... and McGwire holds up Looked like he went around from here But the plate umpire says no Rodriguez asks the first base ump's opinion He says McGwire went around Strike three, swinging That's two away

Swing and a miss Struck him out Number 3 in the game for Johnson. The NL All Stars go quickly in the top of the 4th No runs, no hits and no errors After 3 and a half innings, it's 6-1 AL

A hanging curve...Vidro laces it hard just to the right of Casey He makes a stab at it...Just misses it! It's on into the outfield for a single A wide turn by Jose...but he'll stay at first as the ball comes in

Rodriguez crushes it...Sammy Sosa starts back...baaack....baaaaack...But no chance for this blast...Rodriguez can put another notch in his bat handle...He gave that ball a very nice ride Two ribbies for the AL catcher

Pinch hitting for Garciaparra, Vizquel slaps a hard grounder past second Everett is over to pick it up He tosses it back to second Vizquel will hold with a clean single

The Warden brings in Jose Lima to pitch. Vizquel takes a three step lead Vizquel takes his lead...Throw to first... SAFE! Another throw... easily back Vizquel extends his lead Lima comes home with a slider Olerud takes it...Vizquel is off on the pitch Sweeney up from his crouch, firing down...OUT, Vizquel is out on the bang-bang play

Swung on and hit sharply to short Batista plays it on one hop Over to Casey...Out of there!

Ramirez cuts on a curve that misses in the dirt That ball is trapped nicely by Sweeney Ramirez was badly fooled by Lima's big breaking curve STRIKE THREE! Manny was a little overanxious That's all for the AL in the bottom of the 4th. They pick up 2 runs After 4 innings, it's 8-1 AL

Top of the 5th some changes for the AL All Stars. Staying in at SS is Omar Vizquel, Replacing Olerud at 1st is Jeff Bagwell, In Center Field Bernie Williams has replace Vlad Guerrero, Ron Belliard will play 2nd replacing Jose Vidro and Ken Hill will start the inning as Randy Johnson is done for the night.

Sean Casey steps to the plate. Grounded towards the bag Bagwell comes up with it He throws IT GETS AWAY! Score It: E3 Casey to second

Carl Everett offers at the slider, but checks his swing Oh, Everett couldn't get the bat out of the way It's a soft line drive to Belliard for the out Everett never even left the batter's box One away in the top of the 5th for the NL

Tony Batista hits a rocket over third Ventura leaps He's got it! Quickly over to second Casey dives back just in time!

A high fastball...Alfonzo swings late...He hits a routine pop just left of Bagwell Jeff is under it...And takes it in for the easy out. Alfonzo was looking for the breaking ball We're halfway through here at the Bomb Shelter After 4 and a half innings the AL ahead 8 to 1

Lima misses low on that one Williams draws the walk Number 1 today by Lima

Williams a few feet off the bag at first The runner unable to take a big lead Lima keeps looking him back

Ventura drives a fly ball into straight-away left Sosa one hands it... OUT!

A slow breaking ball Martinez gets a piece of it...He hit it in on his hands...It is popped up into left Sosa is racing in... after an initial step back. He's not going to get there in time! It drops in front of him! Williams had to wait to see if it would be caught He'll have to pull up at second Sammy didn't get a good jump on that one and it cost Lima and the NL that time

Bonds drives a high fly ball to deep center field Griffey Jr. is on his horse And he makes the catch! Williams was running hard Now he's trying to get back The throw He's OUT! Double play. Score It: 8-4 That's three outs, side retired

Sweeney swings...He rips a ground ball towards Ventura It's by him! It's twisting into the left field corner Sweeney rounds first...He will return quickly to first as Bonds gets a nice throw in to Belliard

Chipper Jones up, Low and away...Swung on...Lined into left...Bonds coming on fast...He can't get it...has to take it on one hop...Throws it in to second Score that a single for Jones. That pitch looked like a fastball, but it sure had a lot of movement on it

A wicked curve, breaking very low Griffey Jr. golfs it to center Williams won't get it... He scoops it up and fires it in. Nice piece of hitting by Ken Griffey Jr. A one base advancement for the runners

That's it for Hill as Jason Christiansen comes in from the bullpen.

McGwire taps a bouncer to short...made to order doubleplay ball Vizquel has it on two hops...wrists it to Belliard He evades the slide of Griffey Jr. And completes the doubleplay to first Sweeney and Jones advance on the play. That's two away...

The NL trying to play "catch up" here in the top of the 6th They've scored 1 run But the AL is way out in front by 6

Sosa swings and lifts one toward left Bonds drifts over slowly... He is under it now... And makes the easy catch... And that will do it for the NL

Bottenfield starts the inning for the NL. He will face Ron Belliard leading off for the AL.

Did he check his swing? YES! Belliard walks.

Bottenfield jams Pudge with a fastball. Swung on and topped out toward short Batista is up with it... Over to Casey at first And Rodriguez beats it out! Belliard is able to advance on the slow roller

Vizquel squares to bunt He bunts it . . . Fielded by K.Bottenfield the throw to first...Out. Vizquel gets the job done. That's one away

Bagwell swings and sends a high fly to right It is hugging the line...Everett is over at the fence...It's going to be close...It's just foul! Bagwell just missed on that one . . . Bagwell back in the box And here comes the next pitch High and away Ball four. Bases loaded again for the AL.

Stairs pinch hits for Ramirez and laces a hit into the outfield Sammy Sosa picks it up He fires it to the infield Stairs holds with a single driving in Belliard as Rodriguez and Bagwell move up a base.

Williams takes ball four Wait a second The umpire signals STRIKE THREE! A late call Williams is beside himself! He better calm down If not.. He'll have to watch from the clubhouse. Wally comes lumbering out of the Dugout waving his arms and screaming. Don Mattingly head him off with a couple of chili dogs and a cold one and coaxes him back to the dugout. Two down

Seems that Bottenfield caught some onion shrapnel from the AL dugout. He'll be replaced by Jose Rosado

Matt Williams, pinch-hitting for Robin Ventura, rips a grounder into center field for a base hit, Rodriguez scores from third! Bagwell scores from second! Stairs takes third

Williams takes his lead Rosado holds the runner

Paul Konerko pinch hits for Edgar Martinez and hits a roller to Tony Batista comes up with it and throws It's in the dirt Casey can't come up with it That'll be a throwing error on Batista. That's error number 1 of the game for the NL

And Bonds will sit down...strike three called and that will do it for the AL

More substitutions for the AL as Piazza will come in a catch, Jeter will play Short, Stairs will stay in and play Right Field, Matt Williams will stay in and play 3rd and Paul Konerko will be the DH.

There's a towering fly ball hit by Casey Williams sprints over, and makes the catch Christiansen retires the first batter to face him in the top of the 7th

Wally goes to the mound with the obvious chili stains on his jersey and signals to the bullpen. Billy Wagner trots in from the bullpen as Christensen dodges the pat on the butt from Wally's tomato stained hands. Wagner promptly asks the umpire for a new ball.

Sinking fastball...Everett swings over the top of it...Hammers a hard grounder right at Williams...He scoops it up, throws to first...Out by a step

Tony Batista hits a shallow fly Barry Bonds starts in...He can't find the ball! Batista is headed for second and he'll make it easily Bonds is charged with a miscue That's 2 errors for the AL this evening

Aaron Boone pinch hits for Alfonzo and swings. It's a frozen rope! OH MY!...Stabbed by Jeter to rob Boone of a sure base hit. And that will do it for the NL

It's time for the 7th inning stretch!

Her come the substitutes for the NL. Boone will stay in and play 3rd. John Flaherty will catch. Rickey Henderson will play Left and Brian Giles will play right. Luis Castillo will play 2nd.

Big bender, low and inside...Swung on...Line single to Henderson in left...Picking it up in a hurry is Henderson...Belliard takes a wide turn...But stays at first base as the throw comes in

Slider, down low...Piazza swings...He hits a drive going down the line. If it stays fair it may be gone...Oh my, Rickey Henderson, at the fence.Reaches up... He can't get it though It's a home run for Piazza Great effort by Henderson

That will do it for Rosado as Troy Percival comes in to pitch.

Jeter pounds a grounder toward Ordonez at short Rey moves in front of it... Whoops... a bad bounce But Ordonez stayed with it Over to first and Jeter is retired Nice play by the NL short stop One away

While we wait for the next batter, Bagwell, Let's take a ten second station break This is your Strat-O-Matic Broadcast System Your four sports network!

There's a ground ball up the middle It gets by the pitcher It's headed into center field OH, Rey Ordonez gets to the ball...But there won't be a throw Base hit for Bagwell

Bagwell sneaks away from the base Percival steps away from the mound Now Bagwell moves back to first

Short night for Percival as Remlinger is called in from the pen.

Base hit to left for Stairs Bagwell is racing towards third... The throw is going to third... Bagwell is safe at third! And Stairs advances to second on the throw

Base hit to center for Williams Bagwell scores The 3rd base coach puts up the stop sign...Runner holds.

None of the NL pitchers seem to be able to find the groove tonight. Armando Benitez comes in to replace Percival.

Griffey Jr. swings and misses STRIKE THREE! Borbon strikes out Ken Griffey Jr. And that will do it for the NL

Konerko swings and misses Strike three Konerko didn't have a good cut at that pitch Oh Oh!, with one down in the bottom of the 8th Here comes the rain...It's not raining hard yet Perhaps we can still finish

Doug Jones comes in to face Bonds.

Bonds moves away from first Curve down at the knees...Bonds is heading for second The peg...Castillo has it...Applies the tag...NOT IN TIME!! Castillo couldn't find the handle on the throw They should have had him

Belliard pops it straight up Three players have it surrounded And it will be Ordonez making the play Two down

Flaherty asks for a new ball He calls time and trots out to the mound A conference going on between Flaherty and Jones

Great change up...Piazza out in front...Gets a piece of it...It's a shallow fly towards Giles.

Giles charges, dives for it...He has it...Fine catch by the right fielder

That's it for the AL Here at Bomb Shelter, After 8 innings, the AL has 15 runs, 18 hits and 2 errors While the NL has 2 runs, 5 hits and one error The AL has left 6 on base the NL has stranded 5

Mariano Rivera will finish it for the AL. He is the only player or pitcher left. Rivera delivers a hard slider, outside part of the plate...McGwire steps into it...Lifts a high fly ball to deep left This one's going to be close...It looks like it will stay in the park Bonds maneuvering under it...IT'S TOO DEEP... It's a home run for McGwire!

Rivera shakes his head and tips his cap to Big Mac as he rounds the bases. Even though the NL is still down 15-3, the Fans love Big Mac.

Fastball, swung on and missed. Take a seat Mr. Henderson!

Casey sends a routine ground ball to first. Bagwell takes it on one hop. Flips it to Rivera. Easy out. That's the second out of the inning

Giles hits a drive to left. He hit it right on the button...But Bonds got a great jump...He is closing quickly...OUT! Nice play by Barry Bonds

And that will do it for the NL. The AL wins 15 to 3. Hernandez takes the loss. The hitting star and All Star MVP for the AL is Robin Ventura. He was 1 for 3 with a grand slam homerun.
