Threat Wins Preseason Classic

HOBOKEN, NJ -- The Independence Threat, dominant throughout the tournament, defeated Danville in two straight games to claim the Galactic Goat Preseason Classic Championship. The Threat won all six games it played in the Classic, utilizing a powerful lineup and rock-solid pitching corps to dispose of its opponents. Outfielder Magglio Ordonez was named the Classic's Most

Day 4

HOBOKEN, NJ -- If anyone had any interest in my preseason tournament to begin with and maintains that interest now, here is an update of the Final Four. In the winners' bracket, Independence advanced to the championship series with a win over Danville -- in very impressive fashion. In the Losers' bracket, Cleveland eliminated Columbus, then ran into Danville -- who had beaten them
once earlier in the tournament. The Dixie Dynomite came back to win a thriller to advance to the championship. So tomorrow, the best-of-three series will be played between Independence and Danville for the Championship.

SUNDAY'S GAMES
WINNERS' BRACKET
(6) INDEPENDENCE 7, (8) DANVILLE 0
WP - Hermanson
LP - Boehringer
Dustin Hermanson was simply unhittable, pitching a complete game 3-hitter and striking out 8. Meanwhile, the Threat got 4 RBI from Palmeiro and a 3-for-3 effort from Garciaparra.

LOSERS' BRACKET
(4) CLEVELAND 7, (7) COLUMBUS 2
WP - Pedro Martinez
LP - Moyer
Pedro whiffed 16 Convicts in a complete game win. The Baerga offense notched three runs in the forst and 4 in the seventh to give Pedro plenty of run support. Everett and Ausmus homered to provide the only two runs for Columbus.

(8) DANVILLE 5, (4) CLEVELAND 4
WP - C. Reyes
LP - McElroy
S - Rivera
It looked like it would be a battle between the "Heckle Brothers" in the Championship Series, as Cleveland led 3-0 through six innings. But the Baerga bullpen fell apart after that, allowing the Commish's boys to score 5 runs in the last three innings. Tony Womack's two-run homer in the ninth provided the decisive run.

Day 3

HOBOKEN, NJ -- And then there were four . . . After day three of the Galactic Goat Preseason Classic, Danville and Independence remain in the winners' bracket and Cleveland and Columbus remain in the losers' bracket. The Dixie

Day 2

HOBOKEN, NJ -- The Galactic Goat Preseason Classic field has been cut to 8 teams after "elimination Friday," with many of the Cinderella stories reaching unhappy endings. The higher seeds exacted some revenge Friday, although both of last season's GABL Championship participants were eliminated. The one underdog left in the winner's bracket is the Jersey Shore, who joins Danville, Cleveland and Independence as the only teams left with unblemished records.

Day 1

HOBOKEN -- It was a nutty day to begin the Preseason Classic Thursday as four of the top five seeds lost -- immediately making the losers' bracket a tougher road to the championship. The biggest shocker came when the 16 seed Bloomington River Bandits defeated defending GABL Champ Bridgetown. After that the upsets just kept happening, including #15 Jersey over #2 Grandview
and #14 Florida over #3 German Hungarian. The #4 seed Cleveland is the highest seed left in the winners' bracket. This should be an exciting weekend.

THURSDAY'S GAMES
(16) BLOOMINGTON 4, (1) BRIDGETOWN 3
WP - Scott Erickson
LP - Kevin Brown
S - Allen Watson
Jay Bell's three-run homer keyed a four-run fourth inning which was enough for the River Bandits. Erickson and Watson scattered seven hits, but Bridgetown could not put a rally together late in the game.

(8) DANVILLE 8, (9) GARDEN STATE 5
WP - Orlando Hernandez
LP - Tom Glavine
S - Carlos Reyes
The Dynomite jumped on Glavine early and led 5-0 after three innings. The Goats tried to work back into the game, but Danville recorded 15 hits, including three each by Womack and Clayton. El Duque allowed only five hits in 6-plus innings.

(4) CLEVELAND 6, (13) NOVA SCOTIA 4
WP - Pedro Martinez
LP - Shigitoshi Hasegawa
S - Billy Wagner
The Expos had Pedro on the ropes, up 4-0 in the sixth, but then it all broke down. Hampton and Hasegawa became very hittable and the Baergas notched two runs in each of the 6th, 7th and 8th innings. Wagner was unhittable for the save.

(12) DENVER 4, (5) TEXAS 2
WP - Jose Lima
LP - Roger Clemens
S - Mike Timlin
the Snow Dogs scored three runs in the 9th to steal a win from Texas. The Outlaws did not have anyone in their bullpen to answer the Denver rally. A squeeze bunt by Rey Ordonez actually put Denver ahead.

LP - Francisco Cordova
Kevin Millwood pitched a complete game three-hitter and Tony Batista and Damion Easley hit homers in the Florida victory. German Hungarian got its only run on a homer by Greg Norton.

(6) INDEPENDENCE 4, (11) PHOENIX 3

A back-and-forth game saw Phoenix lead 1-0, then Indy lead 3-1 only to be tied when Mantei blew a save in the 8th. But the Threat got the last laugh in the 8th on an RBI double by Nomar Garciaparra.

(10) STERLING 5, (7) COLUMBUS 3
WP - John Smoltz
LP - Jamie Moyer
S - John Wasdin
The Gas House Gang led 5-0 on the strength of Smoltz's now messed-up arm, but the Cons came back with three in the 9th. John Wasdin, of all people, was brought in to put out the fire and to allow Sterling to advance in the winners' bracket.

(15) JERSEY 5, (2) GRANDVIEW
WP - Kris Benson
LP - David Cone
Benson was very impressive in his first Classic start, helping Jersey continue the upset parade with an 8-inning, 5-hit performance. The Shore got three RBI from Richard Hidalgo and was the game going away.
